About Elvy

Why we started Elvy: a vision for simpler energy in Sweden

Behind Elvy is a simple idea: you should be able to have electricity and heating in your home without having to become an energy expert. Here is the story of why we started the company – and what we want to change.

Why we started Elvy isn't really a complicated story. We grew tired of watching homeowners spend their evenings and weekends trying to understand their electricity bill, comparing quotes for solar panels and wondering whether the heat pump would last another winter. Energy at home had become a full-time job, and that's not what most people want to spend their time on.

This article is about why Elvy exists. Not as a product description, but as an attempt to explain what we want to change and why we believe energy in a Swedish home ought to work differently than it does today.

What did we want to solve?

Many homeowners find the energy market hard to navigate. Different players say different things, quotes aren't comparable, and the customer is expected to coordinate several suppliers themselves to arrive at a good solution. The result is often that the decision gets postponed, sometimes for years, while the electricity bill keeps ticking away.

When we looked closer, we realized the problem wasn't a lack of technology. Solar panels, batteries and modern heat pumps already exist. What was missing was a player that took on the whole responsibility. Someone who installed, owned, maintained and optimized the system, so the customer could focus on life in the house instead of on kilowatt-hours.

How did we think when we built Elvy?

We wanted to build something that worked the opposite way from the rest of the industry. Instead of the customer making a large investment, taking out a bank loan and bearing all the risk for technology that ages, we flipped the model. Elvy installs solar panels, a battery and a heat pump with no down payment. The customer pays a fixed monthly cost over the contract term. Service, operation and optimization are included.

It's a bit like broadband or a streaming service, but for the home's entire energy solution. We own the hardware, we take the risk, and we make money when the system works well, for both the customer and the grid.

“this should be so simple that you almost forget we exist. most people don't want to become energy experts, they just want a stable bill.”
Johan Outinen

The quote comes from Johan Outinen, one of Elvy's founders and the company's CEO. It captures fairly well how we think. The best product is the one that does the job without demanding attention. You shouldn't have to check the electricity price every morning to know whether it's a good day to do laundry. The system should take care of that for you.

Why now?

The Swedish grid is being transformed. Capacity tariffs are spreading, more households produce their own electricity, and the electricity market increasingly rewards flexibility and smart control. For the individual homeowner, that means anyone who is merely a passive consumer will find it harder and harder, while anyone with a system that produces, stores and controls its energy gains a clear advantage.

At the same time, few homeowners want to become their own energy engineer. That's where we see Elvy's role: making it possible to be an active part of the energy system of the future, without having to understand frequency regulation or ancillary-services markets in detail.

What do we believe in?

We believe in a future where your house is a small power plant that works for you, not the other way around. We believe security beats technology, that it matters more that the shower is warm and the electricity bill predictable than that the customer knows the name of the inverter. And we believe simplicity is the real innovation in an industry that for decades has done the opposite.

We're aware that Elvy's model doesn't suit everyone. Someone with capital, technical interest and a desire to own and optimize everything themselves may have good reasons to do so. But for the vast majority of homeowners, security, simplicity and predictability weigh heavier than the margins in a spreadsheet. It's for that group that Elvy is built.

What does this mean in practice?

In practice, it's about moving responsibility. From the customer to us. If the heat pump breaks down in year twelve, that's our problem, not yours. If the electricity price swings sharply, we're the ones who need to handle it within your fixed monthly cost. If the technology advances, we're the ones responsible for keeping your system working as it should.

It's not a magic solution, and we've said it before: an energy solution is still a long-term commitment that should be taken seriously. But it shouldn't require you to become an expert in order to make a confident decision.

We started Elvy because we believe Swedish homeowners deserve something simpler. An energy Sweden where it doesn't take a full-time job to keep the house warm and the electricity bill reasonable. Where the technology is there, but in the background, where it belongs.

If you're curious about what this would mean for your particular house, you're welcome to submit your details through the application form. We'll get back to you with free advice based on your home, your current heating and what your energy use looks like across the year.
